LIGHTED BOAT PARADE
December 17 2011 For more information, visit www.lightedboatparade.org or call 415.526.7528.

Each year, San Rafael unofficially celebrates the beginning of the holiday season with its annual lighted boat parade in the San Rafael Canal. Boaters throughout Marin County devote many hours and days preparing their vessels for what has become one of the largest lighted boat parades in the Bay Area.

Unique lighting schemes and creative holiday themes echo the labor and talents of Marin's maritime community, all in an effort to bring holiday cheer to the hundreds of residents who line the canal parade route. This year Marin Yacht Club, San Rafael Yacht Club, and Classic Yacht Assn have partnered together to bring the community this boating spectacular, and benefit Community Action Marin, Marin County's oldest and largest provider of family support services. The best viewing locations are the Pickleweed Community Center, Beach Park and the Montecito Plaza.

The Governor proposes to realign a range of government services to local jurisdictions, occurring in two phases. Phase I of realignment includes the following programs:

  • Adult Protective Services
  • Mental Health Services
  • Substance Abuse Treatment
  • Foster Care and Child Welfare Services
  • Fire and Emergency Response
  • Other - including court security; public safety programs; lower-level offenders; parole violators; adult parole; and juvenile justice

Under phase II of realignment, the state would become responsible for costs associated with California Children's Services and In-Home Supportive Services,* while the counties would assume responsibility for CalWORKs, CalFresh administration (formerly food stamps), and child support.
